Training Session Tips
Training sessions don't need to be as intense or laborious as you might think. Don't feel that you need to spend hours of training each day. Dogs retain more in smaller training sessions throughout the day versus 1-2 hour sessions. Here are a few tips to make your training sessions successful.
- Incorporate training sessions into your daily life. For example, have your dog on "place" while you're cooking or eating meals, watching a movie, or while the kids are doing homework.
- Use their food and have them work for their meals instead of using treats. Use high-value treats when there are more distractions or if you're in a new environment.
- Training sessions should be between 5 to 20 minutes long (depending on the age of your puppy).
- Adjust your expectations according to the age and how well your puppy knows the command.
- Hold your puppy accountable for commands they do know. Don't allow them to ignore you.
