Choosing the Right Crate for Your Dog
Choosing the right crate for your puppy is important. Make sure you take into account what works best for your household and your dog. Choosing the correct size for your dog is a huge factor in successful crate training. Dogs should be able to turn around, lay down and stretch out comfortably. The crate should not be big enough that there is enough room for your dog to potty in it. Here are some of the crates we most commonly use as well as some of the pros and cons.
Plastic Crates
Pros:
- Great for dogs who prefer to have an enclosed, den-like space.
- Airline-friendly if you plan to fly with your dog.
- Less likely for a dog to escape if your dog is a Houdini.
- Easier to clean potty accidents.
Cons:
- Can be bulky when put away for storage.
Wire Crates
Pros:
- Great for dogs that want to be able to see everything.
- Some come with dividers that can be used to adjust the required space as the puppy grows.
- Easier to place in your home because some crates come with 2 doors.
- Easy to fold and store away.
Cons
- Slightly harder to clean potty accidents.
- Not recommended if your dog is an escape artist.
