Prong Collar

Is your dog not responding to simple “pops” on their flat collar? Are they pulling like a freight train on walks? If you find your dog still doing this or completely ignoring you, a prong collar might be a tool to use.

The prong is a different way of communicating with your dog through pressure/release. When your dog is doing something wrong, you would correct them by doing a quick “pop” of the collar (similar motion as when you’re using a fly swatter). If your dog is doing something right, you keep slack on the leash so that there’s no pressure.

The prong should only be used when walking or working with your dog. It should be off when they are playing or crated. Make sure that your dog doesn’t learn to pull through the prong, otherwise they will become desensitized.

We highly recommend Herm Sprenger prong collars because they give the proper amount of correction and don’t break easily. For dogs that are 10lbs or smaller we recommend Kimberland Micro Prong collars. They are specifically made for small-breed dogs such as Chihuahuas. There are also prong buckles that are sold separately and can be helpful if taking prongs of is difficult for you.

**Make sure that the prong is fit correctly and snug on your dog’s neck.**
