Leashes

Leashes are an essential part of dog training and the type of leash is important. We don’t recommend using bungee or flexi-leashes. They encourage pulling and give the handler less control over the dog. It doesn’t allow for the handler to give corrections. They are also known to break easily.

Leash Length

Leash Length matters. The standard length is 4ft or 6ft. However, your height and dog's height play a huge factor. You don't want to have too much leash where it's a lot to carry.

Nylon or BioThane

We highly recommend using a 4-foot or 6-foot nylon or BioThane leashes. They give the proper amount of control and are sturdy enough that they won’t break. It is also comfortable to hold for most handlers. They are also easy to clean. Both leashes can be found on Amazon, Etsy, or specialty stores like Sierra Canine Supply.

Traffic Leads

If you have a tall dog such as a Mastiff, Great Dane, or Cane Corso a Traffic Lead is a great alternative to a standard leash length. They range from 12-24 inches. These leashes are also great if you are in crowded areas and want to keep your dog close with you. The leashes can be found on Amazon, Etsy, or specialty stores like Sierra Canine Supply.

Long Lines

Buying a 10-30 foot nylon long line is a great addition to leashes. The length is perfect to practice “recalls” or “leave its” in large outdoor areas. These can be found in local pet stores or on Amazon.

Back Ties

Back Ties are short leashes (between 2-4 feet) that can be used to tether (or back tie) your dog to a wall or sturdy furniture.
